HUAWEI'S TRAINING PROGRAM CONTRIBUTE TO MALAWI'S DEVELOPMENT AGENDA
The Universities that have been benefiting from this initiative include: University of Malawi, Malawi University of Science & Technology (MUST), Malawi University of Business & Applied Science (MUBAS), Lilongwe University of Agriculture & Natural Resources (LUANAR), Mzuzu University, Kamuzu University of Health Science (KUHES), DMI University, Malawi School of Government, National College of Information & Technology (NACIT), Deyang University or Malawi institute of Management (MIM). The selection of
students to attend these trainings is done by the University’s management themselves & each university or college send 5 students.

The Huawei company from China which owns Huawei Phones is the one that have been offering these training to Malawian students & these trainings are helping one side of the vision 2063 which is to have a technologically developed nation by 2063.
Huawei is doing so by training the students to have knowledge & skills about Artificial intelligence, Networks (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G), Digital Power, Cloud Computing & leadership skills just to mention but a few. More importantly, the students attend these training without paying any amount of money because everything is paid by the company including the transport expenses.
The Students learn more about what is artificial intelligence popularly known as chat GPT, how does it work, its advantages & disadvantages, how will it be in the next 10 to 25 years, its impact on human being, for instance some people have made a car that has Artificial intelligence (AI) & it is driven by the system of AI (without a driver/self-driven). They also learn how this technological advancement will change the world in the coming years as stipulated in the Malawi’s’ 2063 vision.
Apart from Artificial Intelligence, they also learn about Networks. They learn about the genesis of network (how does it started), the introduction of second generation of network (2G) its advantages & disadvantages & how was it transformed to third generation (3G network) which is partly present and partly gone, the coming of fourth generation (4G network) which is active now & not forgetting the newly introduced fifth Generation (5G network) which is being used in some parts of the world and it shows that it is more powerful than the 4G. They learn the role Networks in developing the country economically, socially.
Digital power is another item that these students get knowledge from. Digital power is about how the country is changing from analogue to digital (the country is now using digitalized gargets or appliances) & in short it is about how the country is developing electronically. Here are some of the things that has been digitalized: presence of digital watches, digitalization of Television and many more.
As government we commend Huawei for this program which is contributing significantly in accelerating digital uptake while narrowing the digital gap’ said Kunkuyu.
Huawei got the license of doing these trainings from Ministry of Education & as well as Ministry of Information & Digitalization. And in his remarks Minister of information Honorable Moses Kunkuyu said that these trainings have come in time when Malawi has set its 2063 vision & one of pillars in it is to be a technologically developed country by the year 2063 & one way of achieving this is by having trainings like these. He also thanked the China based company ‘Huawei’ under the program called SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE.
‘Recent digital statistics for Malawi indicate that 74% of Men & 54% of Women do not have basic ICT skills. As government we commend Huawei for this program which is contributing significantly in accelerating digital uptake while narrowing the digital gap’ said Kunkuyu.
These trainings happen for one week per year & at the end of each training they write exams to test their understanding & upon successful they receive the certificates which can help them to have chances when applying for jobs. Despite this, they also have chance to meet prominent figures & potential employers like the top officials from Airtel, National Bank, Tnm & many more (this gives them chance of exposing their skills & knowledge to the corporate world.
Speaking to one of participants from University of Malawi Rejoice Phiri, said that, she sees herself as a digitally transformed person. Phiri said computer network skills acquired will help in her ICT program & she thanked the Huawei for that. And on the other hand, Peace Nkhoma from DMI University said, participating in Huawei’s Seeds for the Future Program was important for him because it provide unique opportunity to gain hands on experience. Furthermore, the participants also enjoy the Chinese cultural experiences & participate in the ‘’Tech4Good’’ group project with outstanding peers around the world.
